How LOWLINES All Started
Australian Lowline Angus cattle were developed in Australia from a Angus herd which was extablished at the Trangie Research Center in 1929 to provide quality breeding stock for the New South Wales cattle industry.
In all approximately 12 bulls and 30 cows were acquired by Trangie from the finest Angus herds in Canada and Scottland, during the 45 year period from 1929 to 1964. This herd remained closed for the next 30 years and it is from with in this herd that the Lowlines were founded.
Lowline Angus were first brought into the United States in 1997 and are still very much a breeders market. They are almost always black but there are a few red ones out there. Lowlines are naturally polled and offen referred to as one of the smallest breeds of beef cattle in the world today.
65 years of strict selection gave lowline cattle very efficient feed conversion. Lowlines require only 1/3 the feed of traditional beef breeds. 2-3 head of lowlines run on the same pasture as 1 full size cow, giving more choice cuts, higher percentage of dressed weight, and more pounds of meat per acre than with standard size breeds. As for hobby farmers lowlines can be on as small as an acre with mature cows weighing 500-700 pounds and bulls 800-1000 pounds on average. Any way you look at it lowlines are not a bad choice.
