What is a LING LING????

Here at Mini Cattle Pros visitors come and see our Ling Ling cattle and fall in love with there unique look and great beef frame and often ask what is included in the breed. It is very simple really a ling ling is nothing more than a triple cross breed of cattle meaning that 3 breeds of pure breed cattle were using to create this one great breed. A miniature Low line Angus crossed with a miniature Herford is your starting point. Then add a miniature belted Galloway and you have completed the breed we call Ling Ling. Along with the great beef traits and good looks our Ling Ling cattle are super hardy because of the triple cross breeding that was used to create them. We are also experimenting with a 4 breed cross in which we take our Ling Ling bulls and breed them to a miniature jersey. We hope with this breed to have better udder traits and improve milk production which would make a more dual purpose cow. We are not sure if this 4 way is something we are going to pursue but we do have 11 calves on the ground already and will see how they do before making any final decisions.

New York is from a road trip to Southside Stables in NEW YORK hence the name. She has been a great Ling Ling cow for us and has given us 2 red calves already she is 42 inches tall.

Advantages of Crossbred Miniature Cattle

HETEROSIS or HYBRID VIGOR as often called is simply taking two purebred breeds of cattle, mating them together to produce a half-blood cow or bull often referred to as an F1 or crossbred. A true F1 cow in most cases will increase fertility 10 to 15% and also increase calf survival 10 to 15% and have less calfs dead at birth.
A popular mini F1 breed in the United States is a mini Black Baldy typically the result of mating a purebred Lowline Angus bull with a mini Hereford cow or vice versa. Now take that F1 Black Baldy and breed her to another breed and you have a 3 way crossbred cow. By adding a third breed to your F1 cow you would be close to maximuming hybrid vigor which would only make your cows more hardy.
Simply put, hybrid vigor makes it easier for anyone to raise calves and in the mini market a dead calve is money lost. A person getting into the mini cattle market without alot of cattle experience might look at hybrid vigor as a easy and free tool to help them along.

Elmo at 14 months old standing next to Mini Me a 32' inch cow fully matured. From this pic you can see how small Elmo is staying and should mature under 37" inches which is tiny for a belted bull of any mini belted breed
