Brief History Of Dexter Cattle
Dexters are one of the smallest breeds of cattle in the world known as a dual purpose for both milk and beef. The Dexter breed originated from southwestern Ireland from which it was brought to England in 1882. Because of their small sized frames with mature cows weighing between 600-700 pounds and 36"to "42 iches tall and mature bulls weighing around 1000 pounds and 38' to 44" inches tall dexters became very popular with small landowners through out Britian and the British Isles. | Mini Cattle Pros Little Bit Cranberry Red Dexter Bull |
These small acerage landowners now had a breed of cattle which would not only thrive on small acreage but would also do well in hot and cold climates like we have here in utah with our winters getting down to -10 degress and our summers reaching the high 90s. Dexter are usually black in color but also can be a dark red or dun. Considering their small size dexter cows are unusally productive. A milking Dexter cow can produce more milk for its body weight than any other breed. Cows reasonablly fed may give 5,000-6,000 pounds of milk a lactation with 4.5 percent fat content which is high even for a modern dairy cow. Many cows have had yields as much as 12,000 pounds which is remarkable for a 600 pound cow.
Here in Utah at mini cattle pros we are breeding our dexters for the smaller side of the dexter scale. We like our cows under 40"inches tall and think the smaller the better. Most people buying dexter today want something small and safe for their children and grandchildren to be around. Lots of people have a 1/2 acre or two and just want a few cows in there back yard for tax write offs. In most states this is 3 cows or more. Dexters are perfect for this reason sence the laws dont state how big the cattle have to be.

When we decided to build up a dexter herd we could not of be more lucky. Here in utah we met up with Neil and Patt Sorenson of Spanish Fork city which had been breeding dexter cattle for over 12 years. Not only do Neil & Patt have tons of experience but they have been artificial breeding their cows which has allowed them to buy the best bulls from around the world. Our first bull we bought from the Sorensons was Little Bit Cranberry sired by Celestial Zephyr from England. We could not be more happy. We look forward to the future and building up our herd of these great little cows.
