ADVANTAGES OF CROSSBRED MINIATURE CATTLE
HETEROSIS or HYBRID VIGOR as often called is simply taking two purebred breeds of cattle and mating them together to produce a half-blood cow or bull often referred to as an F1 or crossbred. A true F1 cow in most cases will increase fertility 10 to 15% and also increase calf survival 10 to 15% and have less calfs dead at birth. A good example of a popular mini F1 breed in the United States is a mini Black Baldy typically the result of mating a purebred Lowline Angus bull with a mini Hereford cow or vice versa. Now take that F1 Black Baldy and breed her to another breed and you have a 3 way crossbred cow. By adding a third breed to your F1 cow you would be close to maximuming hybrid vigor which would only make your cows more hardy. Simply put hybrid vigor makes it easyer for anyone to raise calves and in the mini market a dead calve is money lost. A person getting into the mini cattle market with out alot of cattle experiance might look at hybrid vigor as a easy and free tool to help them along. |
